  1. Inkjets are for suckers. Unless you print a ton of photos (and why? we have phones and tablets now), you are far better off just printing your photos at a photo printing kiosk and getting a laser printer for handling non-photo printing.

  2. While I generally agree, I think inkjets like this Epson and my 7 year old Canon Pro9000 with lots of ink wells tend to hold up better. Yes, it’s more expensive, but when you need a photo minutes after it was taken, it can’t be beat.

  3. Why? That’s easy. Seeing a photo as a physical object you can hold in your hands, hang on your walls, gift to friends and family, etc is a vastly different experience than seeing it on a phone, tablet or even the internet. Not every photo needs to be printed but we all have special ones that would benefit from it.

  4. And doing it requires special paper, special inks, and a special printer that guzzles ink like there’s no tomorrow.

Far, far better to carefully select which photos to print, and print them at a kiosk, than to get suckered into buying an inkjet printer that is designed from the ground up to use as much ridiculously expensive ink as possible.

  5. Yeah I tend to agree with GQ. “I don’t print often, but when I do…” I use a pro photo print shop like Adorama or whoever. I’m done renting a printer to put ink into.

Color laser printer/scanner I’m keeping tho, way cheap to print from.

  6. LOL Printing at a kiosk also requires “special paper, special inks, and a special printer that guzzles ink like there’s no tomorrow.” You’re just swapping one process for another but they are the same in the end. Regardless, that’s not the question you asked or the one I answered. There are plenty of reasons why you would print out photos. I gave you several. And yes, there are plenty of reasons not to do it. But that’s up to each person to decide. You’re making a blanket statement that simply can’t be applied to everyone.

  8. Yeah – why is this article relevant? And why is it not marked as an advert? Highly unethical, and below the Jim Dalrymple standard.

One more of these, and I am out of here.

  9. unmarked sponsored post?

personally i don’t like all-in-one – printer/scanner. usually the scanner is not too god, and if one of those components breaks, you’re left with a half-functioning mess. especially epson is known for their printers and/or scanners breaking down after a few years and for using lots of expensive ink cadriges (and refusing to work, if one is out of ink, e.g. not printing in b&w even if there’s only one of the color cadridges empty).

  10. I wouldn’t’ have worded it that way, but Glaurung-Quena is correct. The numbers on this have been run exhaustively (Google it), and it turns out it’s much better in terms of cost to use a service, like the one Apple has built into Photos to get your prints than it is to print them yourself. The cost of the photo paper and inks, in addition to the printer itself, require you to print many photos regularly in order for it to pay for itself.

If you’re printing larger format prints on specialized papers that you’re then selling, a high quality, large format photo printer is a worthwhile investment. However, you’re throwing a lot of money out the window printing handfuls of 4×6 or 8x10s at home.

The average cost of printing 4×6 or 8×10 is around .25 to .50 per for a inkjet photo printer at home. To print the same using Apple’s built in service, which is likely to proved a better print, is .12 per. You can improve you home cost is you are truly printing in bulk on a regular basis, but then you’re wasting a lot of time.

They are also correct environmentally. Home inkjets create considerably more waste than using a printing service, and it’s not even close. It’s not a six of one, half dozen of the other as Shawn suggests.

Anyway, sites like thewirecutter.com have delved into this ad nauseam and have all come to the same conclusion. For the vast majority of users, it’s much more economical, as well as being more environmentally friendly, to use a service for printing your photos and getting an inexpensive laser for your other printing needs.

FWIW, as per Jim’s note, the cheap all in one I bought for our home 4 years ago allows us to print directly from iPhone. I can’t imagine releasing a printer today that doesn’t allow printing from mobile devices.

  11. It is far cheaper to get a print from a service. The service is going to use RA-4 chemistry on real photo papers, offering better quality, more choice and lower prices.

I have a Canon 9000 and a newer canon printer which print just fine. But, a quality 8 x 10 is ~$2 from my service including shipping, printed on Kodak metallic stock.

Home printing is an expensive luxury.

  12. when will people learn? If it’s not right for ME, it’s not right for ANYONE.

(Saying this as someone who would never have another ink-jet printer, myself)

  13. LOL Printing at a kiosk also requires “special paper, special inks, and a special printer that guzzles ink like there’s no tomorrow.” You’re just swapping one process for another but they are the same in the end. 14. Inkjets are for people who’ll use them regularly so they don’t seize up. Having gone through two or three inkjet printers, I know I’m not one of those people.

I’m also dubious about the idea of any all-in-one device, especially where continued support for software drivers are concerned.
