It has been a few years since a decision by a major tech company last turned me into a green rage monster, but it just happened again. Code42 Software has announced that it’s discontinuing its consumer backup product, CrashPlan for Home.

Well isn’t that just ducking fucky? Backblaze it is.
Crashplan has been edging away from consumer services for a couple of years now. Their refusal to write native (non-java) apps, their discontinuation of multi-year plans (with or without discounts). I saw the writing on the wall 2 years ago and switched to Backblaze. Very happy with that decision.
This is warning not to trust Cloud Startups with your data! Soon they will will run out of investor money and fold!
And they will lie to you about them folding.
If I was a business user with CrashPlan, I’d be leaving anyway. One simply can’t trust them about anything now.
Actually, one of the cool things about CrashPlan was it enabled you to backup to storage you owned elsewhere. I have a Mac mini and Drobo at my mom’s house, and back up my data there, and back up her data to storage at my house. We don’t have anything in CrashPlan’s “cloud”.
