Personally, I see Face ID and Touch ID as roughly equivalent in terms of someone using me to break into my phone. Add to that, Apple has not yet announced such a product. I’d prefer to save my worry for something a bit more tangible.
I’m curious to see this article, if only to hear more about the nonsense it’s attempting to debunk. I’ll probably read it while playing this in the background:
I must admit I am cautious regarding the potential of FaceID versus touchID.
I have concerns over how it can be as secure as touchID – it’s a darn sight easier to get my face than my fingerprints; and my face is likely to vary a lot more than my fingers over time.
I’m also doubtful how it works in the situations I use touchID for ApplePay. In most cases the phone is at an odd angle to me, quite often flat on it’s back.
I’ll be happy to be proven wrong, but I won’t be rushing for one this time.

For a random criminal or mischievous child, yes. For law enforcement, probably not.
The weakness of TouchID (sweaty hands) becomes an asset in the case of forced opening by law enforcement. Your sweaty hand will make it more likely that you get multiple failures and go to PIN mode. Once that happens, in the US at least, they can’t force you to hand it over.
Seems people seem to be overlooking that “FaceID” will likely include Iris scanning. Twins don’t have the same Iris. I assume the system is using facial scanning in combination with Iris scanning to be even stronger and more secure than one solution in isolation.
Don’t want to allow forced entry? Close your eyes. I imagine it would be harder for law enforcement to force you to open your eyes than to steal your fingerprint from you.

As usual, Rene doesn’t really touch on the major concerns, picks a few that are out on the edge and acts a bit condescending.
The main issue with a potential Face ID is whether TouchID still exists with it and if not, how well Face ID handles the various reasonable edge cases – Apple Pay with the phone tilted slightly away (as happens with some Square terminals where the reader is a small puck that is often just sitting on the counter). How well it works in the dark (I know IR… but how WELL that works). How it adapts to facial changes – for example, I have long rather bushy hair – this afternoon it gets cut. Women often vary their hair styles and often makeup.
It’s not that anyone really thinks that Apple hasn’t thought of these cases. It’s that TouchID is a system we all use and it works very well and very reliably with some known failure points.* And there’s this – even Apple makes mistakes. No company is perfect. Software mistakes are correctable with updates. System, hardware mistakes are not, really.
Finally, if you and he are simply saying “let’s wait and see” well, that’s a reasonable stance. But then stop writing posts about the new iPhones too. Let’s just all wait and see.
I’ll be VERY surprised if they can do accurate iris scanning at arm’s length, at various angles, etc. And a system where I’d have to hold my eye to the camera is a non-starter from a usability point of view.

Not even close. Touch ID is vastly more “secure” Not only can you use a different finger, you can also use different parts of the same finger. Someone trying to guess, exactly how to place which finger would take a lot more time than just pointing the camera at your face. Not to mention as the other post mentioned, there’s the “wet” and “dirt” factor.
I’ll be surprised too. But if anyone can do it, I feel like Apple would be the ones. They sure surprisied me with how well they nailed a fingerprint scanner inside a tiny little home button. Remember, fingerprint scanners had the exact same problems before Touch ID. Touch ID was the first that could scan a resting finger in any orientation accurately.
We know Apple trademarked the term “Iris Engine.” Thats not speculation. I was just pointing that out as a missing piece of the conversation regarding FaceID speculation.
