Google is paying Apple billions of dollars to remain the default search engine on iPhones and iPads, Bernstein said in a note to investors on Monday.
The firm believes that Google will pay Apple about $3 billion this year, up from $1 billion just three years ago, and that Google’s licensing fees make up a large bulk of Apple’s services business.
It stands to reason that, if they are paying billions, they are making billions more.
Not if Apple sets the default to some other engine.
No, it isn’t likely. Most users won’t even notice which engine they’re using, but will continue to call it “googling.” Projecting your personal skills upon the entire consumer market is never an accurate way to assess that market’s behavior.

I wish Google could be made to be Siri’s default instead of Bing. Obviously, I can ask Siri to use Google, but I wish it could be made default.

Just an observation. If I’d intended to insult you, I’d try to be more direct.
So much of the back-and-forth on Loop comments is “My use-case is universal”/ “No, mine is.” They all blur together for me.
And there are other folks like my father-in-law, who’ll see a new malware-installed browser toolbar and think it’s just a Google design change. That’s why such malware remains a profitable exercise.
Both cases we’re describing are about how a non-techie user will likely perceive what he or she is being presented with.
You say most people would notice a difference. I’m saying most people—the ones who don’t even know what a browser is—probably don’t have that degree of awareness. They’re also the reason why malware and social engineering have remained profitable for decades… despite my repeated efforts to teach my father-in-law. 😉
