DP Review:
The entry-level DSLR segment is traditionally highly competitive, and dominated by two big names: Canon and Nikon. With Canon’s new Rebel EOS SL2 just hitting dealers’ shelves, we’ve compared it against one of its main competitors – the Nikon D3400.
Not every beginner photographer needs a DSLR but, if you do, you can’t go wrong with either of these cameras.
Good link. I own a D5100, which is still adequate for me in most respects (and, indeed, far more than I need in other respects). But I find it interesting to see where the D3xxx has caught up, passed it, or even lapped it.
I always recommend that if the D3000-series price point is where you want to be, you’re much better off buying a used D7000- or D300-series camera, for the single overwhelming reason that you’ll have access to a huge range of excellent, lower-priced older AF lenses that won’t work with the smaller cameras.
(That, and you should always buy used anyway, since you can upgrade whenever you’re ready without taking a huge depreciation hit).
The exception is if you plan to shoot a lot of video, in which case the newer, the better: but in that case it seems the Canon is the way to go anyway.
