American Astronomical Society:
The #1 rule for observing a solar eclipse, or for looking directly at the Sun at any other time, is safety first.
How do you know if your eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers are truly safe? You need to know that they meet the ISO 12312-2 (sometimes written as ISO 12312-2:2015) international safety standard. Filters that are ISO 12312-2 compliant not only reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels but also block solar UV and IR radiation. Unfortunately, you can’t check whether a filter meets the ISO standard yourself.
The coming solar eclipse is an almost once in a lifetime experience. Don’t let it be ruined by using substandard equipment and/or dangerous viewing habits.
So what’s the over/under on how many people are blinded because they’re man enough to look at the partial eclipse through their sunglasses?
Shawn, how close are you to seeing the full eclipse from where you live? I’m near Boston, it’ll still be cool…
I’m in Boston, and while this one isn’t coming near us there’s another total eclipse in 2024 that’s coming much closer. I’ll be planning a trip to Lake Champlain to see it. https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2024Apr08Tgoogle.html
Also, how many of them will end up revved up like a deuce?
(Sorry, I’ll see myself out.)
It’s “wrapped up like a douche”

Shaw is only a half hour of traffic from me, I believe (maybe a bit further since his move). We’re somewhere around 85-90%, I believe. It should still be plenty amazing. 🙂
