New website Ten Years Ago makes it easy to look back into the weird world of mostly forgotten web history. The site peers into the World Wide Web as of July 28, 2007, showing the now-simplistic-looking early designs of sites like YouTube, Amazon, The New York Times, and reddit.
Ten Years Ago is a useful tool in that it gathers together sites captured on the same day, so you can recreate what you might see if you were trawling the web on that day in July 2007. Back when even Apple, one of the most design-obsessed companies around, had a website that looked a little clunky.
Spoiler alert: It was an ugly, ugly place.
i like information density and don’t like having to click multiple times, or having to guess where to go, to find what I want. Given that, the forced simplicity that is trendy in website design today doesn’t impress me. Most of these older sites are very functional, information-dense; and that, in my opinion, is good design.
I’m afraid to look at this kind of stuff too much. It’s bad enough when I look at my own older work and fall back into bad habits for new projects.

What?!? Their site is 99% the same today.
Why not put the entire web site on one page? Information dense != cluttered. Those old sites were cluttered. Uncluttered web sites can be information dense.

Completely agree. Mobile first views is a growing trend that has not performed well and will not age well. Web platform should be a web platform. Mobile Apps should be mobile apps.
BWAHAHAHAHA! ESPN still has the same complete fail to render that it often gets today with flash disabled & ad blocker on. They’ve just always sucked at web design at ESPN!
Apple, the instigator of responsive design with the first iPhone, was late to the responsive party by about 7 years. It wasn’t until 2014 that they had a website that was responsive for multiple screen sizes.
Jobs championed iOS Safari’s ability to render sites as is, and the ability to double-tap zoom, but seven years seemed a long time to program a responsive site, let alone a screen-optimized site.
To be fair, W3C recommended media queries in 2012. So perhaps, they were waiting for the official standard on how to handle this.
It’s not quite accurate to say it took 7 years for Apple to go responsive. The term wasn’t coined until 2010 and the practice popularized until 2012-13. So if Apple rolled theirs out in 2014 that isn’t that long.

How do you define clutter? Is it primarily an aesthetic definition or is it a functional one? My point, and it’s certainly a matter of opinion, is that simplicity of appearance as an objective in itself, rather than as a means to improved function, is bad design.
