The incident occurred in the eighth inning of Game 6 of the National League Championship Series (NLCS), with Chicago ahead 3–0 and holding a three games to two lead in the best of seven series. Moisés Alou attempted to catch a foul ball off the bat of Marlins second baseman Luis Castillo. Bartman reached for the ball, deflected it, and disrupted the potential catch.
That moment was seen as a huge turning point in the Cubs fortunes. Instead of holding on to the lead and moving on to the World Series (at the time, the Cubs had the longest World Series draught in baseball), the Cubs went on to give up 8 runs in the inning, lose the game, then lose the next game, ending their World Series hopes.
This was a huge story at the time, with Bartman’s life being turned upside down. Huge blame was heaped on him by an entire city. Remarkable and terrible.

What always infuriated me about this is that other people around him reached for it, and the blame should be on the shortstop that booted the next ball that was an easy out.

I could not agree more. I’m a Cubs fan and the situation pissed me off not because Bartman did what any other fan would do in that situation, including a few right around him, but because the blame was put on him for the the team’s collapse. That still should have been a winnable game. Put the blame on the players where it belongs. They are paid millions of dollars to play a game and should be able to brush that off and move on. They apparently couldn’t. I’m happy that last year’s Cubs could focus past a little adversity.

I’d like to flip this around a bit. Steve Bartman accepting the ring and his statement is a terrific act of forgiveness. Bartman did nothing that needs forgiving. This is the problem with this entire incident.
A class move by a class organization. This new Cubs ownership group does things the right way! As a Cardinals fan, I can appreciate the class being shown here by my rivals and I’m very moved by this gesture.
I hope they bring him to Wrigley Field and present him with the World Series ring in front of a packed stadium.
For the record, its been a number of years now that the Cubs organization has wanted to patch things up with him, but he’s turned down 100% of their attempts in line with a “radio silence” way of dealing with it that is totally understandable.
In short, both side’s positions since the ugliness have been understandable – but resulted in there being no “end of the story”. Both Bartman and the Cubs should be applauded for this.
Now, everyone should rightfully leave Bartman alone, as is his right.
The Cubs, their fans and the Chicago
sports media all deserve to get their buts kicked for the way they treated this fellow. Bartman is the one who deserves all the kudos for the grace he has shown all these years.
Now leave him alone.

So he was guilty of doing what every baseball fan has been doing for decades – trying to catch a ball.
People can be shitty.
He was given the ring at Wrigley, but not in front of the crowd. I’d love to see support come from the fans.
