Fender Mustang GT guitar amps

I haven’t had a chance to use these amps, but it looks really nice. Fender has some of the most iconic amps ever made, so if you’re looking for a way to try out some digital models, you should take a look at these.

  1. I have the GT-40 and love it. The tweeds – ’56 Champ, ’56 Deluxe, and ’59 Bassman – sound really great; I’ve never played through the real things but I love the sounds I get from these, especially the ’59 Bassman. I’m also really happy with the ’65 (Blackface) Deluxe Reverb; I have played through a very nicely taken care of ’65 DRRI, and the GT-40 nails the sound.

The Tone app has some problems though, especially on the Android side (at least from what I see on the Fender forums). Functionality such as being able to reorder presets isn’t working yet, nearly 3 months after release. And on the Android side, apparently Bluetooth connectivity is much less reliable than on the iOS side. There have also been some issues with WiFi such as the 802.11 standards for WPA2 password composition not being followed, so some people have had trouble getting the amp to connect via WiFi. And right now that’s the only way to get firmware updates – the amp downloads them via WiFi.

Some people have complained about the sound; you can find some fairly pretentious “reboxing” videos on YouTube, for example. But there are plenty of people on the forums who love the amps and love the sound.

One word of advice though: when auditioning the amps, don’t rely on the factory presets – I personally don’t think they are very good; they tend to be rather gimmicky. Instead, go to an open slot (if the amp has the latest firmware, it will show plenty of open slots on the screen on top of the amp) and build your own preset based on the amp model and effects you choose. All of the functionality of the amp is available right there on the screen, and the UI is pretty good and easy to figure out. Play with it the same way you’d play with a non-modeling amp and see what you think.
