Files replaces the iCloud Drive app in iOS 11 and brings a number of enhancements to working with your files on your iPhone and iPad. There is a Browse and Recents tab at the bottom of the Files app. In the Browse tab you can easily navigate between files stored on iCloud or on your device, a Recently Deleted location along with Favorites, and Tags. Let’s dive into some of the details.
Even if you are not running the iOS 11 beta, this is easy to follow and an important concept that comes with iOS 11.
I gotta admit, I’m really looking forward to iOS 11. Biggest update in years.
I’ve personally believed Apple was wrong not to have a universal, nested file system in place for iOS from the start. It’s one of the few architectural advantages in my opinion that Android has had.
The nesting part is critical. On a Mac or PC, if I want to find, say, a specific tax form from 2012, I can find it in moments because I have nested files for things like topics and years. I don’t want to have tax forms and other un-related items cluttering my view if what I’m looking for is a recipe.
Everybody has a different way of organizing their data. What works for me won’t work for my wife, and vice versa.
If Apple decides on something designed to work for everybody, as is often their tendency, it probably won’t work well for either of us.
Search helps with this but is far from perfect.
This looks like a useful improvement to me.
