CNNTech:
Hackers attempted to steal data from a North American casino through a fish tank connected to the internet, according to a report from security firm Darktrace.
Despite extra security precautions set up on the fish tank, hackers still managed to compromise the tank to send data to a device in Finland before the threat was discovered and stopped.
“Someone used the fish tank to get into the network, and once they were in the fish tank, they scanned and found other vulnerabilities and moved laterally to other places in the network,” Justin Feir, director for cyber intelligence and analysis at Darktrace, explained to CNN Tech.
Why connect a fish tank to the internet? So you can monitor/feed your fish from anywhere in the world.
With great convenience comes great hackability.
Yup, in all aspects. Internet connected devices are going to be a major battle security concern to control.
My cat Lucifer hacked the fish tank. He also targets smart bird cages.
Pity they didn’t name the casino.
@InternetOfShit, though you’re probably already a follower.
Yes I am. : )
Also, I hate the term “internet of things” give me a break. Now I’m just being cranky I guess.
Poor suicidal robot, “he” must have seen the future…
I like to think it went a bit like Rick & Morty’s butter robot.
The fish, it should be noted, were of average intelligence.
Hmmm. http://www.wondersatwindcreek.com/Tank.aspx
Hmm.
And even they knew an IP connection was a bad idea.

This is one reason I’ll use HomeKit stuff if I do add internet addressable stuff. The security seems a lot better and although there are fewer things that are HomeKit compliant, I only need 1 good product per category.

“Why was the fish tank on the same network as anything that needed to be secured?”
