Man falls off motorcycle

This guy merged onto the I-80E (Sacramento, CA) on his motorcycle as we were driving in the fast lane. As he merged, his bike would shake and wobble. He sometimes would only have one hand on the handle bars while it was shaking!! We couldn’t figure out why it was shaking, but we noticed it would only do it once he hit high speeds.

We paced him for 5-10 miles after watching him “almost” loose control (about 5 or 6 times), so I got my phone out, thinking “its only a matter of time before he crashes” and I wanted the video as evidence in case anyone else got hurt. Sure enough the very moment I get my phone out, happens to be the time he loses control. We pulled over immediately…..called 911, and help the man (and his bike) off to the side of the road as quickly as possible. He did walk over to the right shoulder by himself. His face was really mashed up (his nose looked broken) and arms covered in blood. Crazy road rash!!! I still wonder how he’s doing πŸ™

Most experienced motorcyclists know about “speed wobble”. It often happens with poorly balanced tires or some mechanical misalignment. From the description above, this rider was a complete moron who didn’t recognize the wobble or thought he could “ride it out”. You can – but not at highway speeds. Look at how far he slid and notice he wasn’t wearing much in the way of protective gear. That t-shirt and jeans he had on would have quickly shredded. Next to shred would be his skin.

  1. The problem with the “death wobble” is it’s unpredictable. Braking hard might make it worse. The rider shouldn’t ever ride at high speeds when he knows the bike has the wobble.

  2. Unlikely. Read the description: “We paced him for 5-10 miles after watching him β€œalmost” loose control (about 5 or 6 times)”. First time is, “WTF is going on?” Second time is, “Oh oh….” Three or more times? That’s just being dangerously stupid. The speed wobble doesn’t come and go at high speeds. It’s consistent. So the rider would know that it happened when he was going fast but not when he slowed down. Yet, he chose to go fast.

  3. That video just gives me the chills. I can’t imagine the road rash that guy has.

  4. I rode for over 10 years and never experienced a wobble like that, not that bad anyway.
If I had, even if it was less than that, I would just slowly ride it home and check it out.
I can not believe he had one hand on the handle bar when it started either. Just wow.

  5. Kinda made me sick to my stomach honestly. Had various people in my life have motorcycle accidents. Wasnt a great day. Could only picture what the guy looked like after he stopped skidding across the asphalt =

  6. The Loop has always been a blend of things. Mostly tech news from an Apple perspective, but also photography, music and motorsport (including motorcycles). I love the combination. πŸ™‚

  7. “Kinda made me sick to my stomach honestly.” Sorry to hear that. I hope the video didn’t autoplay for you. I tried to warn folks in the description and the title to let them know it wouldn’t be pretty. My apologies if it autoplayed and forced you to watch it.
