Nike’s pilot program to sell certain products on Amazon and Instagram is a precursor to it forging a deeper relationship with online retailers, and could hit sales at sporting goods retailers such as Foot Locker Inc.
There is no doubt this will hurt retailers in the long term. Shares of Nike went up on the news, but shares of retailers went down. Once this goes beyond the pilot program, retailers will really get hit hard.
Probably too late but retailers that do little more than store and hand out merch need to make changes or shut down.
I’ll still need to try on shoes before I buy. And return-mailing shoes that don’t fit is a huge hassle.
I wouldn’t feel bad for brick-and-mortar retailers just yet. When drone delivery becomes a reality, traditional stores could act as local pick-and-ship warehouses. Their employees will grab items that users order online, then put them onto drones for delivery.
I wouldn’t feel too bad about brick-and-mortar retailers just yet. As customer visits start to drop off, their business model could shift to pick-and-ship. Online orders could be fulfilled by sending products out via Lyft / Uber and eventually flying drones.
And with a little change of perspective, the headline could easily read: “Nike, Amazon deal may allow customers more online access that they desire”.
Too bad for other retailers, but yeah, as a customer, status quo is bad for me.
Of course it will hurt retailers.
Then they will go out of business. Then the property they leased will go empty, probably creating an eyesore. Then, more people will lose their jobs. Then, Amazon’s hegemony will grow. Thus, your life will be impacted.
Think angry white Trump voter.
And it will negatively impact your life in ways you can’t imagine yet.
“Will”? That’s bold all-knowingness. How about, “Might”, or “Could”?
Paying my bills online has been a big time saver, rather than shelling out time to write a check, and buying stamps. Rarely are things as black&white
Good retailers have always given excellent product advice to customers who need it. Those retailers are going away, too.
Zappo’s success suggests your huge hassle isn’t universal.
What’s an example?
Fewer jobs leading to a declining tax base, everywhere.
Nah, that won’t impact your life at all. As long as you can save some time, right?
Yea, if you consistently buy Nike running shoes (for instance) you should know your size.
That being said my town has a small running shoe store with excellent service that my family frequently buys at.
Of a good retailer? Every used-bookstore I’ve ever visited. The late Tekserve in NYC. A handful of shoe stores. There are lots of others—even among big chains—but I’m guessing you don’t really care.
How have you never been in one yourself? Are you housebound, or do you just live in a crap neighborhood?
Holy smokes!
Even within one brand, fit differs.
You’re the Captain of the ship and your going down with it!
That’ll be a great reaction to having realized that Amazon has destroyed much of its competition, which means their low pricing is no longer needed.
See my reply to your shoe size comment.
Whatever. Bro.
What in the hell are you talk king about? You started out okay but slowly devolved….
Way too many variables.
True, but its happening regardless. The question is, what now? (Rhetorical)
What do you mean?
Holy smokes comment, shoe size comment.. I see no relevance.
I said “holy smokes” because he started that weird attack on where I live (which he’s totally wrong about) and the shoe size comment because he’s just totally committed to his raving. I mean, Nike, shoe sizes are pretty reliable from my experience.
I more or less agree with him but anger like he’s expressing isn’t going to help anything. Nothings going to change the direction things are going in.
When I asked for examples of retailers I was sincerely asking for examples and he replied with an attack on me.
Wait a sec… Selling on Instagram? Is that even a thing?
Wish I knew.

“I’ll still need to try on shoes before I buy.”
My wife almost exclusively buys Clarks, and apparently she can buy online without a problem.
For me? I’ve had shoes all the way from 11-13.5. And my foot hasn’t changed in a long time.

Retailers are done for me. Amazon changed the way I shop. And to be honest, I refused to give in to Amazon for years.
