Jeff Butts wrote a great, easy to understand, article on the refresh rate of the new iPads.

  1. The first thing I thought when I turned on my new 12.9 iPad was, “Holy crap! This is a 120Hz interface. I’ve never used a 120Hz interface.” My wife took my 9.7 iPad Pro to replace hers and when I have to use, I miss the smoothness of my 12.9.

  3. The 120Hz refresh rate matters for whole another reason. All the (leading) VR headsets have either 90Hz (Oculus, Vive) or 120Hz (PSVR) refresh rate. Slower refresh rates cause nausea. Therefore Apple had to master the refresh rate first in order to proceed with their VR/AR project. That also explains why they took such an “massive effort” (see The Talk Show, around 46 minutes in). They wouldn’t spend 3 years and go through every layer from silicon to hardware to power management only for better scrolling in Safari. That’s just another piece of the puzzle.
