Last night, the Computer History Museum hosted Pulitzer Prize journalist John Markoff as he interviewed forrmer iPhone engineering team members Hugo Fiennes, Nitin Ganatra and Scott Herz, followed by a second interview with Scott Forstall.
This is a historic interview. This team worked on technology that changed the world. They made the decisions that informed the design you know and love. And they worked with Steve Jobs.

This was a brilliant interview (both of them). Reminded me of 1984 and the early interviews with the original Macintosh team.
I particularly liked Forstall’s stories. What an interesting guy.
Wouldn’t it be ironic (and interesting) if Forstall, like Jobs, came back to Apple later as CEO (or in some other capacity) after being fired and going through a personal transformation outside of Apple.
I’d love to see SF return to Apple in any capacity.
It’s the perfect story: grow up at NeXT and Apple, go off and do other great stuff to broaden horizons (live outside the bubble), then come back in. Arguably it’s what allowed Jobs to return: he had some of the edges knocked off of him with NeXT and starting Pixar and had a broader experience than just having been at Apple since the beginning.
I’d be interested to see Forstall return to the Mac platform either as an independent developer, or as an ecosystem partner. Its obvious to me he’s brilliant and its a shame he’s been blackballed from Silicon Valley.

Simply because he’s been out of the game for so long. I see your point, and it’s probably a non-compete clause that’s kept him silent all these years.
My bad, “blackballed”, wrong choice of words. “Muzzled” seems more accurate.

When field testing the iPhone SF mentions that “it never felt like work. It always felt special”.
That’s the POV, or insight that has me pretty convinced SF’s still needed within the company.
My guess is it wasn’t just Forstall. Ive and Fadell were also bumping into people at that time. Cook probably made the right choice but it really does seem that there were some pretty big egos floating around there at that time.
