Bloomberg:
To make a ton of regular paper requires 100 tons of water, TBM says, while its Limex paper is made without water. In place of 20 trees, it uses less than a ton of limestone, as well as 200 kilograms of polyolefin. The five-year-old startup recently raised an additional 1 billion yen ($9.1 million) from an existing backer, and aims to list its shares by 2020.
Limestone is plentiful, water, obviously, not. Surprisingly, paper use is growing rapidly, demand said to double by 2030. This is an interesting play.
Paper is biodegradable. And this doesn’t sound like paper. Polyolefin is a polymer and the description of this new paper sounds very… enduring.
Yeah, water conservation seems to be the one positive outcome for using this over pulp-based or organic paper. Unless this can be cheaply recycled, I would not think this a preferable medium to pulp-paper.
I’m surprised to learn that paper use will double in the next 13 years. I never print anything anymore, nor buy periodicals. I do use tissue and napkins, so maybe that’s where its growing? Wow, imagine wiping your ass with Limex!
…which might be better for books than printer/copier paper
Typical Bloomberg take on the difficulty of monetizing such a product. I wish these people nothing but success.
You might want to read the article. It doesn’t seem to be very good for books. The guy is showing off how cool and indestructible is business card is.
Except that thing about the water? It doesn’t go anywhere. It just gets recycled. Paper use increases partly because of government. Certainly in my own industry, it’s government regs that that the main driver of our paper use.
The oceans have 1.3 x 10^21 liters of water.
7.3 billion humans consume about 70% of the total output of the Amazon river.
1 river.
Nuclear fission could provide water to every human being in the world though distillation and the residual solids could be returned to the ocean and make not a dent.
Trees are just plants – like corn or wheat. They can be harvested and replanted. Just because the timescales are different to humans doesn’t mean that the timescales are different to the planet – which they’re not.
