Apple today announced that Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, two of television’s most creative and successful executives, are joining Apple in newly created positions overseeing all aspects of video programming. Erlicht and Van Amburg will lead video programming worldwide, reporting to Eddy Cue. They join Apple from Sony Pictures Television where they have served as presidents since 2005, and have been responsible for some of the most popular and widely acclaimed programming of the past decade, including favorites such as Breaking Bad and its spinoff Better Call Saul, The Crown, Rescue Me and many more.
Apple is getting serious about video content.
They were never going to stop at the level of Planet of the Apps.
Apple definitely plans on becoming a player in this industry. I just don’t see them doing it for profit, though, more of a means to an end.
The company that did away with the gun emoji in order to shape its users thoughts… I’m not holding my breath for the shows they’re planning.
Not small hires. Interested to see if Apple has some unique vision to bring to market (or further acquisitions) because otherwise I’m genuinely confused as to why Apple feels the need. It’s not like this road was real lucrative for Sony over the last 25+ years.
Also, people aren’t exactly starved for things to watch or entertainment venues asking for monthly subscription $$$.

I work in film and TV and “content creation” is a shit-show in this world of cat videos and viral “hold my beer!” moments. Its a waste of time and money, with nothing but Jimmy Iovine’s ego fingerprints all over it. Apple should buy Tesla and create the infrastructure we need to build a better, more sustainable world. From the computers we need to create that cheap, pointless content, to solar power, electric cars, assembly line robots, and 3D printing, Apple could build the decentralized, customer centered world we need, instead of wasting time and money on one more TV show that simply distract us from the real issues we face.

As a consumer who cut the cord about 15 years ago, I’m happy to see that the tv I can now pick and choose from has never had a better collection of options.
Another “Apple should buy X” panacea. Yeah, I’d like it if Apple could save us from ourselves, too.
Apple might or might not want a future in which it creates new public infrastructure, but it does seem to want
want a piece of what Netflix, Prime, and Hulu have helped create.
Perhaps in building up the infrastructure to support new television, they might also make inroads into the pipes that transmit all this content. More choice in that sector would benefit a lot of people, too.
