Crumb-free bread will mean ISS astronauts can now bake in space

New Scientist:

Astronauts could soon be waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread. A new dough mixture and oven specially designed for use on the International Space Station will be tested during a mission next year.

It’s an ambitious goal. Bread is a staple food on Earth but can be life-threatening in space.

This sounds silly until you read the article and realize how important an experiment this will be.

  1. Food Technology in space is a fascinating topic. Just did a paper on 3D Food Printers for uni and the stuff they are doing there is amazing. Being able to produce your own food from ingredients in space will be a big part of travel and colonies on Mars etc. Carrying prepared food takes up to much room / weight, too hard to resupply.
