It’s been a week since Apple announced the new 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and the early reviews are now in. While reviewers do express a few reservations along the way, the overwhelming tone is positive.
Phrases like ‘Apple pays off its future-of-computing promise’ and ‘the biggest step forward the category has made yet’ suggest that tech writers are finally taking seriously Apple’s claim that an iPad is for many a realistic replacement for a PC.
There is disagreement about just how far that claim stretches, and eyebrows raised over the all-in price of a device that makes little sense without a Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, but those are the only real reservations found.

I don’t think I agree with the iPad Pro being expensive..
Let’s say the new, top-of-the-line iPad Pro lasts you 5 years, you’re looking at less than $20 a month. Adobe CC + Office 360 subscriptions alone will already cost more than the hardware they run on..
Agreed that the ipad is not actually all that expensive.
And someone who thinks it’s “a device that makes little sense without a Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil” is basically completely failing to understand the purpose in life of an ipad, pro or otherwise.
Nerds and tech journalists have been moaning and complaining about how the ipad can’t fully replace their laptop for (insert purpose here) because it lacks (insert PC-like thing that was purposely left out of the ipad) ever since its introduction, and they still aren’t getting it seven years later.
If you need to do PC-like tasks, then the best tool for the job is a PC. The Ipad shines for tasks that are impossible or annoyingly difficult on a regular computer.
Oh dagnabit, my iPad Air is on it’s last legs. I guess I’ll just have to buy a new iPad Pro. Poopy birdy noms noms.
Seriously are these ‘reviewers’ living in an alternate Trump reality? The 12.9″ iPad Pro with it’s full size keyboard (the best keyboard I’ve ever used BTW) has easily lived up to it’s pro label for the past two years I’ve been using it. I feel bad for these people who don’t know how to change the way they work and are stuck using Windows Laptop and MS Office. I mean c’mon, get with the times already.

Eh. I could argue it either way. Base price with Pencil and Smart Keyboard is $900. Add more storage or cellular or move to the 12.9 and it’s even more.
Basically, you’re MBP territory once you add much (10.5 with 256g, cellular, pencil and keyboard is $1140+tax). For a full on productivity machine that’s not bad but it’s a significant step up from, say, the $329 entry level iPad and it’s pretty pricey if what you want really is a tablet that’s only sometimes a productivity machine.
Well, if you’re not getting the Pencil or Keyboard, do you really need a Pro? At that point, why not get a 9.7″ iPad for half the price?
Lots of reasons – For 20% more screen size. For 2x the ram. For a non reflective display. For a 120 hz refresh rate.
Also, there are plenty of people who will only want the pencil, or only want the keyboard. Labeling the tablet as useless without both is just stupid.
I think the new pricing of the 2TB iCloud storage plan might make the higher-capacity iPad models a little less attractive for many people.

I am waiting for swift playgrounds to become a full Xcode, then I will consider the iPad Pro ‘pro’ enough for me. Or.. Apple needs to toss the A10 into a macbook enclosure and port macOS to ARM, the benchmarks show Apple’s chips are outperforming the Intel chips on those laptops.
