Johnny Lin, Medium:
I scrolled down the list in the Productivity category and saw apps from well-known companies like Dropbox, Evernote, and Microsoft. That was to be expected. But what’s this? The #10 Top Grossing Productivity app (as of June 7th, 2017) was an app called “Mobile protection :Clean & Security VPN”.
Watch as Johnny Lin follows the money. This is no isolated incident.
As angry as I am to hear about scams like this, I’m also embarrassed for Apple that creeps like this manage to get into the App Store.
And at #10 in the Top 10 app earners is kind of a slap in the face to Apple’s vetting system.
Yes. I’m angry at their victims, but thoroughly embarrassed and disgusted at Apple.
Our app was rejected for not having the right boilerplate in a list of purchases, yet these apps just pop open a purchase prompt? To be clear, I’m happy adding the boilerplate because it’s helpful. But if this app got through Apple is not doing their job. Not one bit.
Scary to imagine that someone would agree to that. Equally scary to imagine a second would, without one of them complaining to Apple and getting it banned.
There are still way too many people who react passively to strong injunctions that appear on their screens.
