Earth — Shot on iPhone

This is one of my all-time favorite iPhone ads, mostly due to the voiceover by the great Carl Sagan.

To get a sense of why I think so highly of him, spend a minute reading Sagan’s Wikipedia page. To me, he’s the real deal and his words ring true.

  1. Seth McFarlane and Ann Druyan are going nuts on Audible. Levar Burton, Seth McFarlane, Ann Dryuan, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson have read COSMOS.. They also have Demon Haunted World (Cary Elwes & McFarlane), and Pale Blue Dot with Druyan and Sagan himself.

this ad made me think of the Jobs narrated version of Think Different https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpzvwkR1RYU

  2. Nope. There are plenty of claims that extra-terrestrials have been visiting Earth for many millennia. They say there are artifacts and early technology that were given to humans by extra-terrestrials. Don’t tell me that no one has heard stories about Area 51 where captured alien space-craft are being kept, tested and reverse-engineered. I’m not saying any of this is true but I sure have no proof to say it’s not true.

So, why don’t we have starships? The claims are that the captured craft are only short-range scout vehicles sent from larger star-traversing craft. I’d say it’s very possible the government doesn’t want the general public to know about this because it might cause panic to find out we’re not the only intelligent life-forms in the universe.

Other intelligent life is certainly possible if the observable universe is billions of years old and contains billions of galaxies each containing hundreds of billions of stars and planets, there certainly should be other intelligent forms of life. We simply couldn’t be that unique. There could be plenty of long-living species who could travel the stars in their lifetimes at around 30% the speed of light.

Carl Sagan was a human-centric dreamer and he believed humanity is all alone. I guess he never stopped to think he could be wrong and that there were possibly facts being kept from him. Maybe he wouldn’t know if any of the people he ever knew were extra-terrestrials who could duplicate human life-forms.

  3. Carl Sagan absolutely did not believe that humanity is all alone and was a major early proponent of SETI.

However, he was also a real scientist who believed in evidence and data, not some credulous tinfoil-hat wearing loon willing to fill his mind with garbage.

You greatly underestimate him and should consider reading some of his books before you spew nonsense about him.

  4. It’s unfortunate that with everything science has done for us it still needs defenders – and even then never seems safe – but Sagan was one of the best. He and Asimov (Asimov more for non-fiction than his fiction) were two of my early influences.

I highly recommend “The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on The Evolution of Human Intelligence,” which I found almost magically insightful because of the inter-disciplinary combination of co-writers he and Ann Druyan’s respective talents.

And the ending of Contact (the book, not the movie) put it among my favorite sci-fi novels of all time.
