Apple today announced HomePod, a breakthrough wireless speaker for the home that delivers amazing audio quality and uses spatial awareness to sense its location in a room and automatically adjust the audio. Designed to work with an Apple Music subscription for access to over 40 million songs, HomePod provides deep knowledge of personal music preferences and tastes and helps users discover new music.
My first thought was the iPod HiFi speaker, but this is so much more. I’m looking forward to trying this out.
Not sure about this thing. I really like the AirPods, but I find Siri pretty much useless.
Its weird that they did a “sneak preview” of this today. It won’t ship for another 6 months, and the keynote was already very long and not lacking in good stuff. Seems like it could have waited until the September event, which is usually has more of a music focus than WWDC.
100% they are hoping to stall any momentum competing devices have gotten.
But letting devs know about these products this far in advance is relevant too.. it gives them a good head start brainstorming new ideas before launch.
Looks great. Would love to see little, less powerful versions I could set up as desktop speakers.
The tech sounds potentially compelling, though I’m not sure how the directional virtual surround sound will work for multiple people in the room. Also unclear how it works with family (or just multiple) Apple Music accounts.
The name…eh. Lame. Really not an evocative statement being made with HomePod. The product deserves better. Names under Tim have stunk. If he adopted a cat from ASPCA he’d name it Cat.
Maybe should have been a Beats product with an Apple special edition version. It’s 80% a speaker.
As a Sonos owner, this doesn’t give me good feelings about the integration between Sonos and Apple Music ever improving.
Which is a shame, because I really love Apple Music, and I really love my Sonos. (And the HomePod is not at all my flavor of decor.)
I guess, but that has not been an Apple tactic in the past.

HomePod doesn’t appear to have any charging function. This isn’t a deal breaker but it’s definitely presents an inconvenience. I’m a heavy speaker dock user to charge iPhones, iPads, AirPods and a couple of other devices.
Placing a USBx port above or below HomePod’s power cord would have allowed for a (short) Lightning cable/Apple iPhone dock to be connected without any compromise to its aesthetic.
We have a cat named Mr. Gato. Sometimes simple is just fine. 😉
Apple only pre-announces products in categories that they aren’t selling into. E.g. 2007 iPhone announcement. This freezes some sales of existing competitors, gives Apple some time to “hype” the product (with silence), but doesn’t give competitors enough time to successfully copy the product.
But yeah. Nice attempt at trolling.
Oh my god.
Somebody buy this guy a clue.
