National Geographic:
Renowned rock climber Alex Honnold on Saturday became the first person to scale the iconic nearly 3,000-foot granite wall known as El Capitan without using ropes or other safety gear, completing what may be the greatest feat of pure rock climbing in the history of the sport.
He ascended the peak in 3 hours, 56 minutes, taking the final moderate pitch at a near run.
I’ve been an admirer of this guy for years, even if what he does utterly terrifies me. This is an incredible feat. I don’t know I could run 3,000ft on flat ground in under four hours.
Superhero.
Fascinating article on how his brain seems to work regarding fear: http://nautil.us/issue/39/sport/the-strange-brain-of-the-worlds-greatest-solo-climber
3,000 feet is .56 miles. Just FYI
but climbing 3,000 feet is impressive
This is an incredible achievement, and I say this knowing the kinds of things Honnold has free soloed before.
I climbed the Nose Route on El Cap in the late 1970’s in what was at the time, traditional style (free and aid) and took a bit longer than normal (3 days normal, we took a long 4 days) and while people have been speed climbing routes on El Cap for years now, this is beyond any of that.
I also did the regular route on the NW face of Half Dome (before rock fall changed it) which Honnold free soloed a while back. Incredible. That alone was mind blowing to me. This is incredible.
To top it all off, Honnold is a nice person, not too full of himself and relatively humble for someone who’s been world famous for many years now.
Freerider is the free variation of the Salathe Wall, a classic El Cap route put up by the recently passed Royal Robbins in 1961. Robbins would be proud of this achievement and no doubt admired Honnold in the last years of his life.
