Beginning June 6, users of the Waze Carpool app will be able to find rides from Waze drivers already going their way – and vice versa – throughout the state, expanding on a service only available to date in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Sadly, my first thought was to be careful of who you drive with. However, it is an interesting experiment.
I’d do this. But I’d publicly post about every ride, at least for the first few.
Here’s how we did it in the old days: when my wife lived in Berkeley in the ’80s, before we met, there was a spot where people would congregate in the morning. Drivers heading into San Francisco would pick these people up so they’d qualify for the carpool lane. After work there was a similar spot in San Francisco for people coming back to Berkeley. She says it worked great. I’d never be able to do it because I’m not comfortable being in close quarters with strangers.
Even though we still live in California, the Waze carpooling will never be a consideration for us because now we live in a sparsely-populated rural area.

How is this any different than hitchhiking? Is this as dangerous as hitchhiking? What do you do if you get into a car and realize the driver is impaired (drunk, on drugs, etc.? What do you say to the police if the car gets pulled over, the police decide to do a search of the vehicle and find illegal drugs or a dead body? What do you do if the person seems intent on sexually harassing you?
