Cone is a beautifully designed iOS app that uses the phone’s camera to pick Pantone colors from the world around you.
The $2.49 app samples colors along with their Pantone name in real-time. Cone is a very handy way to create satisfying color palettes from real life scenes, and it also provides the hex color values for use in web or graphic design.
I don’t know that I have a use for this app but it’s a very clever implementation.
I used to use an app that did basically the same thing. It was a nice way to generate color palates for websites using the colors prominent in photos. I stopped using it when they changed the app to require an account to use it. I’ll have to check this one out.
How is this possible? The ambient light temperature alone is enough to skew the appearance of every color.
That also occurred to me. I’ll have a look at this later to see if it requires a “white balance” preset of some kind.
Did you happen to try it? I’d be curious as to how accurate it is using something obvious like 185 or so.
Haven’t yet. I’m almost curious enough to try. My current work doesn’t often require specifying Pantone colors.
I’ll leave this tab open and consider.
