Yes, this is an hourglass. You turn it over and it measures out 10 minutes as the particles inside run through the small hole in the center of the glass. But that’s where the similarities with hourglasses you know end. It’s hard to think of a simple object hiding more complexity than this one.
You start off thinking, “Well, this is stupid. It’s just an hourglass.” You read more and think, “Kinda cool design though.” Then you get to the price and think, “There are 100 people out there with more money than sense….”
Geez, it’s like an Hour Glass Edition.
Comments are also disabled on that article, a first for any of their limited edition released. They know the backlash they’d get from the community if the comment section was open. But that’s okay, because as you said… there will surely be 100 people with more money than sense. If you Google around, you’ll see a lot of partner sites/blogs promoting this exact hourglass for them, with comments disabled too.

but newson was first, he already designed one for ikepod in 2011 (and sold it for a cool $28500 then).
the design is probably not unique enough to prevent esington from copying it.

well this one isn’t really an hour glass as much as a very-well-hardboiled egg timer, with a leather mat to stand on. Props to Shawn for being a little more objective than some other writers I’ve read today. This isn’t the first limited edition hourglass Mark’s designed and there’s going to be more I’m sure, so it’s quite a few hundred dollars of actual workmanship, and $11,000 of marketing.
Well, if you look at it as art, then $12,000 is not out of the realm of what people pay. And how much was that original Apple Watch Edition?
