Biometric authentication systems – again – don’t deliver on their security promise: The iris recognition system of the new Samsung Galaxy S8 was successfully defeated by hackers of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC). A video demonstrates how the simple technique works.
The video is embedded below (with a German voiceover). This seems incredibly easy to replicate. Did Samsung even try to break their own iris recognition system?

In all fairness, easy-ish.
You’d need to get a picture of the person, ahead of time, in “night mode”.
This would be much more alarming if you could use any photo, and at most, have to reverse it or similar.
Then you need to get the actual phone, which once you have the phone all bets are off anyway.
Long is the day Samsung becomes a solid software company.
They approach software like Sony does and that proved inadequate to compete long-term. In the high-stakes smartphone security market, mediocre software can be potentially devastating. Especially, when you re-can cheap software and pass it as your own.
That didn’t take long.
Even if this authentication approach actually worked, who wants to take off their glasses every time they want to use their phone?
CCC cracked Touch ID literally the day after the 5S was launched. That’s CCC’s MO.

Yes, though it was installed by the owners. It did activate the camera LED, but only briefly.
