The company has recently held discussions with payments industry partners about introducing its own Venmo competitor, according to multiple sources familiar with the talks. The service would allow iPhone owners to send money digitally to other iPhone owners, these people said.
Not sure I see the logic in offering a Venmo-type service if it is not universal. When I need to send someone money, I never want to check to see if they have an iPhone first.
It doesn’t have to be universal to work. The infrastructure is in place. Apple has almost 1 billion registered users with financial data on file. All that’s left is negotiating transfer fees.
why not?
Yeah it does. “Here, I’ll pay you for last night… if you are a guy? Oh, you’re female? Sorry…”
This is the equivalent. Sub in “use an iPhone” for “”are a guy”.
It’s a silly restriction that brings the user of the server zero benefit. I can already use Square and Venmo and send money to anyone. Why would I want to move to a service that does less?
Build it into iMessage, only show the option for blue users, bam: frictionless money transfer.
And for bonus Apple + shareholder points, your balance can be painlessly used in Apple Pay and iTunes/App Store/Apple Music to easily buy (ideally Apple) goods and services.
Eh. That’s a cool idea, actually, but assuming I’m interested in this kind of electronic money transfer,I want to be able to transfer money to anyone. I do this now with a friend on Square Cash. He happens to have an iPhone so I could use an Apple only solution but… why? I don’t want to have to maintain 2 of these services, one that works for everyone and one for people on iOS. More to the point, where’s the advantage to ME?
PS: Your idea made me check and… https://squareup.com/help/us/en/article/5505-send-and-request-money-with-square-cash
So if I want it in iMessage, I can do that now with my existing Square account. As for being able to easily buy Apple stuff… I don’t do that often enough to want my money tied up in an Apple account balance. If I’ve paid for dinner last night and someone sends me their half, I want that money in my bank account.
