This is amazing to watch. My imagination, or do they keep calling him “Mr. Job”? Remember, this was before the iPhone. Steve was there telling the Cupertino City Council about Apple’s purchase of a huge parcel from HP due to their explosive growth. Again, before the iPhone.
Five years later, Steve went back to the council to talk about the idea of the Spaceship campus. They got his name right this time.
Can’t help but note the difference in Jobs, both in physical appearance and in his voice, from that first video (below) and his Spaceship campus pitch.
Jobs has a way of communicating and persuading that seems to me to be exceedingly rare…and enviable.
I found it interesting that the name “Hewlett-Packard” keeps popping up, both in Apple’s origins and its current history.

I was always impressed by how Jobs took ownership of any detail, no matter how big or small, and nurtured it along into maturity.
He could have sent a rep to the city council to communicate Apple’s wishes, but I sense he enjoyed the process of personally connecting with other individuals to make something special happen.
I also suspect he learned valuable lessons in dealing with civic administrators, from his experience in trying to demolish/rebuild the Jackling House.
“And, uh… since we’re your largest taxpayer I thought you might be happy about that.”
Apple is a very different company without Jobs. Some things gained, some things lost. But whether creating a near-magical aura around products at launch, or subtly expressing his leverage in what is effectively a preemptive negotiation as in this video, Jobs had an ability to almost-telepathically share his understanding about ideas that were important to him.
I’ve watched many hours of Steve Jobs videos over the years, partly in the hope that some of his extraordinary ability to communicate would rub off.
So far, no luck.

I’m going to guess that we haven’t been able to witness Cook’s more-important meetings, where he’s most effectively used his own ability to communicate.
