More on updating your old Mac Pro as a capable VR and gaming platform

Last week, we linked to a post from Daniel Pasco on updating a 2009 Mac Pro:

I turned a 2009 Mac Pro I picked up off of Ebay for $1300 into a superb professional workstation, gaming, and VR platform, simply by adding an SSD drive and a new video card.

Here’s a follow-on post with all the detail on the build, really well written with lots of pictures. Thanks for this Dan, a real service to the community.

  1. This phenomenon of older pro Macs being better pro Macs than today’s Macs exists because Apple essentially killed all the pro Macs. All of today’s Macs descend from a consumer Mac of the past:

    • all of today’s MacBooks descend from the original MacBook Air — they are all made to be as thin as possible, as light as possible, with no concession to performance or wired connectivity at all — you can’t have 32GB of RAM or 4 terabytes of SSD even though those components exist at low prices and vast quantities today because they simply will not fit into the tiny enclosures of all of today’s MacBooks

    • today’s iMac descends from previous iMacs

    • today’s Mac mini and the trash can both descend from previous Mac minis — they are made to be as small and self-contained and appliance-like as possible, with no concession to custom configurations or internal expandability

So you need 4 terabytes of SSD in a notebook? Get a pre-2012 MacBook Pro or any 2017 PC. You need multiple accessory GPU’s? Get a pre-2013 Mac Pro or any 2017 PC.

None of that is surprising. Apple had a very clear vision of how this decade would go, and they were outrageously wrong. The Mac Pro trash can is the least of it. I can’t think of one thing they got right. They bet on iPad software being so lucrative that all the Mac developers would invest billions to move their software over, but nobody paid for iPad apps, so only Apple ported their PC apps to iPad, where even they have to give them away free. And that is only Apple’s consumer apps. No Final Cut, no Logic — and yet, there is no modern Mac to run those apps on either.

If Apple was behind iPad, they should have made iPad App Store and a very easy way to port Mac apps over, a la Carbon. If Apple was behind the Mac, they should have continued to evolve it so that by now it has built-in pen and touch and other features that creative pros need yesterday. They should have gotten either behind one of them or behind both. As it is, it doesn’t help me that iPad has Pencil when Mac has Creative Cloud. I can’t put those 2 together myself into the Surface Pro that my work requires. So I unquestionably will still use an iPhone and iPad mini but the bigger items are going to have to run Windows. Very depressing when I remember Steve Jobs saying he came back to Apple in 1997 because he didn’t want to run Windows for the rest of his life.
