John Warren Geils Jr., better known as J. Geils, the guitarist of the the J. Geils Band, was found dead in his home in Groton, Massachusetts Tuesday. He was 71. R.I.P.
Being a Boston man, I’m saddened.
But also pleased that the Groton police were doing regular checkups to make sure he was doing OK.
But then, again, even more saddened that he didn’t have anyone with him to do that.
J Geils Band freeze-framed a few choice memories in my mind from that era.
Plus, it’s the first and last time I’ve ever seen someone play two trumpets at once while on a pogo stick.
Saw J Geils when they opened for Johnny Winter in Minneapolis way back and before any of the 80s hits happened. One of my favorites is, “First I Look At The Purse,” from their 1970 self-titled album. They really new how to rock and J Geils made me want to learn guitar. An awesome player and I will keep his music playing.
