I can vouch that this works and it’s pretty easy.
My daughter was on the way home from a school trip to Boston, and they made an early-morning stop at a rest area where nothing was open but the Starbucks. She didn’t have enough left on her card and texted me to add some on for her. It was literally a one minute process to open the app in iMessage, pick an amount, verify the Apple Pay purchase with a thumbprint, and send the gift.
On her end, once she received the message, she tapped on it, had the option to add it to her existing balance in the Starbucks app, and that was that.
Looks like demand crashed Starbucks’ servers or something, ’cause the app keeps giving me an error.
