I’m currently in the process of building a new Hackintosh rig for 2017, so imagine how surprised and happy I was to hear that Nvidia is working on beta drivers for its GPUs with the latest Pascal architecture. Up until today, I had just settled on being relegated to a Radeon RX 480, or a Maxwell-era Nvidia card.

With today’s announcement, the Hackintosh just got exponentially more appealing. Nvidia’s announcement is positive for a variety of reasons: there’s the prospect of using an eGPU setup with a MacBook Pro, along with future prospects of Nvidia cards powering future Mac Pro hardware.

I’ve ran a Hackintosh since 2009.
It still f**ks with me to this day, usually around the time of a system update where it’s easy to forget to do some pre preparations such as updating the Clover bootloader. Installing the yearly OS X releases are not fun either.
Be prepared for black screens, non booting system, and other headaches which are usually overcome with a few hours of forum reading, VMware OS X Windows installations, unplugging and replugging SDD’s, experimentation and hours of trial and error to get things back to how they were – maintaining a Hackintosh is a different ball game to running a real Mac.
Despite the occasional hassles, It’s now been eight years of overall pleasure with OS X.
Said video card cost more than my entire build. Even so, good news for the gamers
I feel obligated to point out that there are new iMacs coming this year that – according to Phil – will be powerful enough to serve portions of what has traditionally been the “pro” market. That would almost HAVE to mean that the next iteration of MacOS will support Intel’s Kaby Lake chips – if the new iMacs are going to be pro powerful, they will pretty much have to be based on those slabs of silicon.
The upshot? If you want the creme-de-la-creme of Hackintosh power, wait until the new iMacs hit the market to see if you can build with the latest generation of processors …
