Music streaming service Spotify said on Tuesday it had signed a deal with Universal Music Group that lets artists release new albums exclusively on its paying premium service for two weeks.

The multi-year license agreement with Universal Music could make Spotify more attractive to Universal Music’s artists, who include Taylor Swift, Adele, Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Kanye West.

Jim has a disdain for Apple Music that clouds his usually great insight. The entire point of the Universal deal with Spotify was overlooked. This wasn’t about stealing exclusives from Apple.
The deal now lets artists restrict new albums to paid Spotify users only, which has been the biggest point of contention between artists and Spotify and levels the playing field for Apple Music which doesn’t do free plans.
His disdain for Apple Music comes from personal experience. Not sure how that relates to this piece of news.
The take was “notable Apple favorites in there”, implying that Apple may be lose the exclusives they’ve built the business on. A strategy that Jim has openly lamented despite whatever success it may have produced for the moment.
Missed entirely was the main point of the deal and how it’s actually of great benefit to Apple Music. So that’s how it relates to the piece IMHO.
