Insane front flip of a monster truck

One distance flip was enough for winning the Freestyle Competition in Las Vegas on March 25, 2017. Lee O’Donnell driving VP Racing Mad Scientist Monster Truck takes home his first ever Monster Jam World Finals Freestyle Championship after he performed one crazy distance flip.

How much fun would it have been to be inside that truck?

  2. Australian celebrity Grant Denyer broke his back whilst driving one of these. The truck wasn’t doing anything crazy. It just landed with a thud and that force was enough to do the damage.

Lengthy recovery. Thankfully he’s ok now.

  3. There’s a great passage in the book “Driving Like Crazy” where PJ O’Rourke is riding along with Michael Nesmith in the California Baja in a tricked-out customized pickup truck:

“Until I’d strapped myself into the codriver’s seat, I hadn’t known whether Nesmith was really any good at this or just fooling around. In a minute I wished he was just fooling around. A skillful driver can beat the crap out of a passenger in an off-road race vehicle better than he can do it with a baseball bat.”

I suspect these monster cars are a lot like that. When that guy got out of the truck, notice the back brace and how it attaches to the helmet. I can totally believe a guy broke his back.

(And a plug for that book: it’s hilarious and everybody should read it, as well as everything else O’Rourke has written.)

  4. Just watched this amazing demo again.

    1. All four wheels turn, never noticed that before on monster trucks.

    2. The front flip was done in conjunction with a wheelie from the jump before so the front of the truck was already up and the back hit hard enough to turn it over. Not that this is easy, it’s amazingly tough to choreograph, but I sort of saw how it’s done.

    Wow.
