Apple today announced iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition in a vibrant red aluminum finish, in recognition of more than 10 years of partnership between Apple and (RED). This gives customers an unprecedented way to contribute to the Global Fund and bring the world a step closer to an AIDS-free generation. The special edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhone will be available to order online worldwide and in stores beginning Friday, March 24.
I have to say, those are some gorgeous looking iPhones.

Sure was hoping for new iPad Pros. Glad they brought the prices down for the entry but… FFS, the 12.9″ Pro is a year and a half old.
Buried in the press release: the Iphone SE is getting a capacity bump, so I guess it’s not getting updated this spring.
Some possibilities:
The long predicted spring event (or press release refresh) will be in April or may instead of march. New ipads and/or macs will debut then.
There will be hardware refreshes at WWDC, whether announced on stage or not.
Last year’s Spring release schedule did not work out to Apple’s liking, and they are moving all apple events and product refreshes back to the fall this year.
So they renamed iPad to iPad Air and then renamed iPad Air back to iPad. That is so innovative!
And i say good. Keep the nomenclature simple. Ipad, ipad pro. Macbook, macbook pro.
I suppose it’s too much to ask that they rename the Iphone SE to simply be “iphone mini”.
Far more newsworthy – they lowered the price of the plain ipad to the very un-apple price of $330. Experience suggests that next year that will go down to $299. It is now cheaper to buy a full size ipad than an ipad mini.
So then what I see on the site now as “iPad” without the “Pro” is what used to be the iPad Air 2? Is that correct?
The X means it has more GPU power. It will be faster than the air 2, espcially for non-gaming tasks, but not as good as the ipad pro. To be safe, wait for reviews/teardowns before buying – the weight and thickness have changed, so there’s more going on than just a cpu bump.
True, but from a high level, it appears that it’s generally like an Air 2, slightly thicker. Speaking very generally, I know. This is encouraging…my girlfriend’s third generation iPad is finally starting to lag for her…she loves my Air 2 (as do I!) and this new pricing just brought it closer.
I remember the Air 2 being the dividing line, on split-screen…if you had an Air 2 or later, it worked, but if you had an Air or earlier it didn’t. I’m expecting that this one will work with it.
Could be a strategy shift on the iPad: lower device margin, but make it up in services revenue. Anyway, looks like a solid upgrade/price cut.

Most of the Ipad’s sales decline in recent years has been due to tanking mini sales, so they are getting rid of low end minis. Now the mini is the exact same price as the highest capacity ipod touch. I think that says something about the market they are trying to sell the mini to – people who fill their devices with tons of games and media. I assume that’s the strongest demographic for what’s left of mini sales.
troll post. the names of the products aren’t the only things to have changed. and who else in the tablet industry is pushing tech innovations the way Apple is? no one. there is no tablet industry — just an ipad industry.
I like the red. I hope it is available on the next iPhone (7S?) since I’m not planning to update until then. I would like the face of the phone to be black though.
Leave it to Apple to make a product in a red that I might look at more than twice.
An iPad in red would be very sexy.
