As Jason points out in the quote above, how do you raise and lower the volume in a device with no dedicated volume buttons? A bit of a conundrum. And as the AirPods evolve as a product line, as they become capable of more complex behavior, will Siri be the solution?

My AirPods just seem very clumsy. TapTap to get Siri so I can say “Resume Audiobook.” No response. TapTap. TAPTap. TapTAP. And all the time, I’m basically beating up my poor eardrum, and after a very short time my eardrum really becomes unhappy. If I get a message while I’m listening? The iPhone reduces the volume on the audiobook but doesn’t pause it, so I miss what’s being said. With the wires, I could manually pause playback. Not so with AirPods; they’re too slow. When I get a call, I find myself hoping I won’t have to be the one to break the connection because it’s hit-and-miss using the AirPods. I generally now either use the iPhone home button to summon Siri, or (because honestly Siri makes too many mistakes) I access controls on the phone directly. I often find myself using the white wired EarPods simply because I don’t want to deal with the hassle of AirPods that day. Maybe they’ll improve. But when they do, will I be up for dropping $250 on a new pair just to find out?
I love my AirPods. I just use my iPhone to adjust the volume. Really not an issue.
I’d love to be able to play/pause on one AirPod and activate Siri on the other. That’s my only “complaint”.
Voice commands can never be the first interface that a user confronts.
Volume control: How about swiping up or down on the earpiece?
I always thought sliding your finger up or down the stem of your AirPods to adjust the volume we be a simple, natural gesture. I get there’s not much room in there, but if anyone could make it work it would be Apple.
I really like the Airpods. Pairing is awesome, the charging case is awesome, that they pause when taken out of your ear is awesome, the ability to use just one is awesome.
But in my experience Siri is crap. Its too slow, and not consistent enough to be useful.

IMO, something like the AirPods are best paired with an Apple Watch, which then becomes the UI to pause/resume or volume control. The things are currently too small to add a UI to.
If people want bigger headphones with UI, there’s plenty such choices (including Beats ones with the W1 chip).
FYI, you can change the volume on the AirPods by double-tap activating Siri and saying something like “set volume to 50%”
