Daily Mail:
Whether you love happy endings or a harsh blast of reality in TV dramas, you could soon be able to decide what you get.
Netflix, the TV-streaming company behind hit shows such as The Crown and House Of Cards, is working on ways to give viewers control of key plot decisions. Some of the storylines will be simple and linear, like the Choose Your Own Adventure books many grew up with.
For example, viewers might decide whether an inmate in the prison drama Orange Is The New Black joins a gang or not.
This is a fascinating development. Imagine a future where you can steer movie plots based on your preferences. Or, perhaps, an AI in your Apple TV could know you well enough to choose and customize content for you. The future!
I don’t think this will work. People want a story to control them, not the other way around.
Why bother then? Besides being boring it would just continue to narrow our world view. Soma anyone? Yeah, no thanks.
Part of the beauty of good TV or movies is having an expert storyteller weave us a story. I don’t see this choose your own adventure thing as enabling that. The interesting use might be to allow you to pick which character’s point of view to follow.
Ugh, no. I’m not a writer, I’m a fan. Allowing a population of fans to decide how the story is told results in little more than cliché and nostalgia.
“The future!”? I don’t think so. Sounds like pandering to me, as well as shirking responsibility on the part of authors, screenwriters, directors, producers.
According to John Lassiter of Pixar, their motto is: “Story is King!” With Disney taking over, Pixar stories have become more watered-down and polluted with Disney propaganda.
If creative artists involved in filmmaking expect true fame and the big bucks, they need to maintain their unique artistic mastery of their medium, which does NOT include pandering to the audience, leaving plot decisions to the mongrel horde.
So, this is just a videogame right? Like one of those story focused ones.
I don’t want to know what’s going to happen. Isn’t that the fun of it?? Just imagine what would have happened to so many great and classic movies if something like this were to have been used.
No. Silly idea. I watch stuff that’s done by pros because they’re DAMN GOOD at doing what they do. If I were a really good TV storyteller, I’d be in Hollywood.
dear lord no. writers are best at crafting narratives, viewers are best at consuming them.
This would create even more parochialism in society. Isn’t it enough that out social networks, news, ads, and search results are focused on our “profile”?
And yet… all the people who complained so loudly about Star Wars 1-2-3 drove Lucas out of storytelling. This way they can make the Star Wars movie they want.
They drove Lucas out of storytelling because he was no longer good at it.
Yep…we can all become further ensconced in our personalized comfortable bubbles. That ought to work out well.

based on the literature-changing success of “Chose your own Adventure books” and the rise and dominance of interactive movies since the age of the cd-rom (remember the seminal “voyeur”?), i predict this to become just as popular.
