Driven by user choice and the benefits of increased productivity, Apple adoption is growing quickly in the enterprise. See what IT execs, managers and front-line IT professionals think about this trend, in a national survey conducted by Dimensional Research and sponsored by Jamf.
There may be some bias in this report but it at least confirms something many have known or suspected for years – Macs are easier to deploy, cost less and, when employees are given a choice of computer systems to use, they often choose to use Macs. The days of IT claiming they need to standardize on one device or brand are over.
Apple’s ROI advantage is not new. It’s been proven and published for many, many years.
We have a new head of IT, who started about a year ago. Since then he’s become COO of the company (we are a worldwide non-profit with labs and schools in over 13 countries), still in charge of IT, and he asked his staff for a totally tricked out MacBook Pro with TouchBar. Our head of network security got the same Mac.
Trend bodes well for my next computer. 🙂
Yep, standard OS was useful when people deployed and ran apps on their local machine. That, along with cost, was the huge advantage Wintel had in the late 80s and 90s. But with things increasingly being web native, it doesn’t matter as long as you can use a modern browser.
Sounds just like our new IT manager too.
Macs cost less over time, but it’s probably an uphill battle convincing school administrators of that.
Yep. In fact, it might be arguable that the savings like IBM is reporting would actually be further increased in a school setting, as schools might be able to eek out more years in service from a Mac or iPad than a typical enterprise would.
I sold product to libraries in IL for a few years and ran into similar hurdles. Longterm math usually isn’t enough to pull decision makers away from the sizzle of a $100-150 Chromebook.
There is truth that claiming “We can’t use Macs.” is probably an overstatement. BUT there are certainly benefits to standardizing to one device or brand and I don’t know if most average companies have the resources to make it wide open. We use iPhones as our exclusive phone if the company provides it, but we use Wintel PC’s because there is tons of software we need that is only on that platform.
The head of IT could use a Mac no problem. But a field technician who works on equipment (in our case Heavy Equipemnt like Bulldozers, Backhoes, Excavators etc.) needs the tools the supplier provides that are Windows only.
We are even tied to Internet Explorer because many diagnostic tools those technicians need are still plugins based…..which even MS is trying to do away with. Change is not as fast for these specialized areas as we might think, and the resources to make those changes are not as readily available both from a talent and financial standpoint. Reloading every image in a parts management system to use HTML5 isn’t going to happen overnight.

Longterm math isn’t always a concern of political appointees or elected officials with strong opposition.
If only Macs could somehow run Windows…
