The Wirecutter:
If you’d rather add USB charging ports to your outlets than buy USB power adapters, the best option is the Topgreener TU21548A Smart Dual USB Charger Outlet. It’s one of only two models we found that support 4.8-amp charging across two USB ports, meaning it can charge almost any phone or tablet at full speed, without making you give up plug receptacles. The outlet is simple to install and standards-certified for safety, and it won’t look out of place in any setting.
I’m not a fan of these devices (mostly because I’m an incompetent boob when it comes to tools and installing stuff) but this is important because if you do this wrong or buy an inferior product, you could have serious issues. Wirecutter says there are only two models that meet their standards.
I’d rather buy an adapter with some flex, since the USB cables aren’t that strong. Plus next generation could eliminate these ports entirely.
I’m quite happy with my Anker multi-charger: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Charger-PowerPort-Multi-Port-Samsung/dp/B00VH8ZW02
I get the criteria The Wirecutter used (insisting that each USB port supports 2.4 amp charging) but in reality any UL approved model will be perfectly safe and meet code. The real issue with these are:
1) As Steven Fisher pointed out you’re hard-wiring something that can change standards
2) The constant refrain of “anyone handy with a tool can install these” is irresponsibly dangerous.
3) Despite what most reviewers say, a large percentage of homes don’t have electrical boxes that will accept these and remain code-compliant. (Ask the guy with the 57 year old house how he knows that)
I’ve yet to see a review of USB outlets that address any of these issues.
This. My home is 20 years old and the wall boxes are thankfully deep enough. I’ve installed two Legrand USB enabled outlets in the Master Bedroom and one on the kitchen backsplash. Pretty easy but I made sure to get a circuit tester, outlet check and become familiar with my fuse box.
I think the the emphasis on amps in the wirecutter article were a bit off. I was happy with 4.2 amps in the Legrand and i’ve charged iPhones and iPads just fine. My recommendation if someone wants to do this.
Glad I read this article because Top Greener is a product line I was unfamiliar with. I wouldn’t focus so much on amps. Easy install is going to make your life more or less a joy than the amps of the USB ports.
Buy in bulk if you can. Home Depot carries a 2-pack of Leviton USB Wall chargers for 34.99 and Amazon has other companies even cheaper.
I love gaining the extra ports in my Kitchen and Master Bdrm. It cleaned up the areas.
I may put more in some rooms to run indoor camera like Arlo or Nest Cams without using the bulky AC adapter.
There are outlets all over the country that need to be replaced. I would highly recommend these TopGreener USB outlets.
