Replacing your long fluorescent bulbs with new LED bulbs

Great tip (and links) from Rob Griffiths on replacing any fluorescent bulbs in your house or garage with new LED bulbs. Do it. You’ll have better light and they’ll last forever.

  1. Fantastic. I believe our local library is in the process of doing this. I won’t be sorry to see the last of fluorescent tubes, anywhere.

  2. Costco has had some fantastic deals on LEDs and I purchased a set of these exact tubes for our garage a few months ago. Good garage lighting is important to me, and I’ll replace the rest of our fluorescents as they fail.

We’ve undoubtedly saved at least many hundreds in lighting costs by having switched to CFL relatively early, and more recently to LED.

  3. Yeah the Feit tubes he mentioned from Costco are really nice and bright. I’ve used them to replaced the ones in my garage and one fixture in the kitchen. My only problem is that back when the fluorescent replacements for incandescent bulbs came along our local utility ran some serious subsidies to make them really cheap (like ending up at <$1 each) so I bought a bunch of ’em.

I still have a bunch of ’em because they last forever themselves. I’m slowly replacing them with LED’s as they burn out, but it’s going to be a while yet; some of the fluorescents have lasted 4-5 years now…

  4. Had the same problem, but I decided to bite the bullet and just replace them anyway. I’m much happier with the LED bulbs.

    I gave away the CFLs.

Unless they are Cree ones. They last about 6-12 months, then start flickering.

  6. Dang, that happened to one of the two Crees I bought awhile back. Bought that brand on the strength of a Wirecutter review, I believe. Good thing it was still under warranty.
