My other favorite fictional detective

Earlier this week I posted about Jeremy Brett being my favorite Sherlock Holmes. I received a lot of great feedback from that, so I thought I’d tell you my other favorite fictional detective, Poirot.

David Suchet is absolutely spectacular in his depiction of Agatha Christie’s famous detective. I have watched these shows over and over again, enjoying them each time.

  1. Couldn’t agree more, Suchet is brilliant. Have been rewatching just lately. Ep 1 of season 3 is essentially a prequel for the series (all Hastings for first 10 min!), based on Christie’s first published novel. Always great.

  2. Jeremy Brett (what a great voice) is my fav TV Sherlock as well, excellent production standards.

Other excellent Brit detective/police shows, and there are so many,
    in no particular order –

    • Foyle’s war; Michael Kitchen (Slow, quite and methodical).

    • Inspector George Gently; Martin Shaw (Old hand guiding hot headed young blood … the times are changing).

    • Lovejoy; Ian MacShane, who always managed a bit of sleuthing as a roguish antiques dealer.

    • Cracker; Robbie Coltrane as Fitz, a classic antihero: alcoholic, a chain smoker, obese, sedentary, addicted to gambling, manic, foul-mouthed and sarcastic, and yet cerebral and brilliant. He is a genius in his speciality: criminal psychology.
Several different psychotic types were explored during the run of the show with increasingly complex psychological motivations that, as the series entered the middle of the second series, began to expand beyond the criminals being investigated to the regular cast members.
As the series moved forward the storylines became as much about the interactions of the regulars as it was about the crimes. In many later episodes, in fact, the crimes often became background to intense, provocative explorations of the police officers’ reactions to the crimes they investigated. [Wiki]
