I’ll always have a soft spot for Top Gear but its first season after the Clarkson implosion was not good by any measure. But I also don’t think “The Grand Tour” was a whole lot better. I’m looking forward to seeing this version of Top Gear with the two-thirds new cast.

Thing that shocked me about the 1st season of the new Top Gear was that the dumb American just brought it for his fame, was by far the best part. Matt was really good in his segments. They made the right call moving to anchor the show around him.
Indeed. I found myself actually laughing out loud at the recent teaser for this new season (the insurance bit). While I’m a staunch supporter of the old hosts (and did enjoy this season of The Grand Tour for the most part), I’m keen and ready to give this new Top Gear season a look.
You should remember that Matt LeBlanc was top of the leaderboard as the fastest “star in a reasonably priced car” during the Clarkson et al era. So he wasn’t just some yahoo American TV star.
I do recall that, but that doesn’t mean he was a good fit as host. However, my comment regarding him as a “dumb American brought in only for his fame” was a directed at the UK press and fans who almost universally rejected him when he was announced using that description.
Meanwhile, it was the highly praised local, Chris Evans, who completely flamed out.
Point taken. I was just mentioning his leaderboard ranking because he’s a car enthusiast. But, yeah, Chris Evans was dreadful. Hopefully the next season will be fun to watch.
I am one of those guys that hopes both TG and TGT make great seasons one after the other…I want as many good car-show episodes as I can find! ?
