Mashable:
Will the real conclusive study on the health effects of sedentary behavior PLEASE stand up??? Or sit down … who even knows anymore.
See, it’s like this — every so often a new study comes out declaring that sitting for hours on end is essentially your ticket to an early grave. So then you read it, become increasingly terrified and make a conscious decision to stand more often.
But just when you finally get your standing desk approved by your office manager, another study declares that standing for prolonged periods is equally as threatening to your health.
So where does that leave us, scientists?
As usual, the truth stands (see what I did there?) somewhere between. I’ve tried several kinds of standing desks and I prefer the ones that are adjustable. With bad knees, I can’t stand for an entire work day so being able to sit and stand when I feel like it works best for me.
Yeah so I have had back issues and use basically a high bar style table as my stand up desk at work. I love it. I guess I can’t see buying a desk like one of these as what I’m using is inexpensive and does the trick.
Can’t remember where I saw it, but I read an article stating that it’s not so much sitting or standing that’s the problem, it’s being in one position for long periods of time that is bad for you.
Which makes perfect sense. That’s why I like the idea of adjustable desks. Stand for an hour, sit for 30 mins….repeat…
Please tell me Mashable’s writer isn’t making this a zero-sum game.
Adjustable desks are the way to go. Find something affordable that’s easy to raise or lower. There are some good choices out there.
Doing that as we speak.
I have an adjustable desk. I sit from 8-10 am. Stand from 10-12 and then stand for any meetings. I find standing during meetings keeps me focused better.
I have also started stretching lately and I think standing part of the day is helping with that for obvious reasons.
I have my laptop on an arm off of my treadmill. I can do photoshop retouching at almost 3 mph and get in 6-12 miles a day. Keeps me moving, don’t tire from single position and my back is stronger.
variety during the day is likely the best policy. i stand, perch, sit, and lay. us an Uplift Desk with easy touch controls for favorite heights.
