Weird Al has a career-spanning boxed set in the works, due for release this November. One track in the set is a never-commercially-released Beatles cover (video embedded below). I’m told that Weird Al recorded this in his garage, sent it to Dr. Demento, but Beatles’ lawyers sent him a cease and desist to prevent him from releasing it. Not sure what’s changed.

The only thing that’s probably changed is that Weird Al is now a cultural institution, not some upstart young kid “making fun of” The Beatles. They “get” him now, so they’ll let it go. Or there’s some case law somewhere that once and for all would explain to those lawyers why they’re wrong an should go take a hike.
I wasn’t a fan of Weird Al when I saw him perform a few years ago. I liked a few of his songs, even bought “The Saga Begins” video because the kids and I enjoyed it very much. I was blown away by his performance. He is no slouch. It would be easy to dismiss him as a goofball entertainer, but for the fact that he is so talented on so many levels that he basically does whatever he wants. I live in a rural lightly populated area, a college town, but that didn’t affect his show being sold out and ovrrun with fans wearing tinfoil hats and other paraphernalia referencing his creative efforts. It was like a Grateful Dead concert for nerds and it was delightful. He is a pro and brought a multimedia experience that I’d heard about but had to see to really appreciate why he is still relevant. If you ever get a chance to see him perform, I highly recommend you do. It’s a cultural experience.
I also think George Harrison would have been honored to have been paid tribute by Weird Al. I like to think he would anyway. He was my favorite Beatle, so I’m biased.
