The Guardian:
Özbilici had the composure, bravery and skill to take the photograph that is today named World Press Photo of the Year, the judging of which I chaired. It’s the third time that coverage of an assassination has won this prize, the most famous being the killing of a Vietcong suspect, photographed by Eddie Adams in 1968.
Özbilici’s is an impactful photograph, no doubt. Yet, while I was all for awarding it the spot news prize that it also won, I was strongly opposed to it becoming photo of the year. I narrowly lost the argument. I voted against. Sorry, Burhan. It’s a photograph of a murder, the killer and the slain, both seen in the same picture, and morally as problematic to publish as a terrorist beheading.
I’ve been following this discussion since the photo was given the “World Press Photo of the Year” award. It’s been a fascinating discussion on several levels. I honestly can’t decide on which side of the fence I fall. I can see the excellent points both arguments make.
the photo of the slain rhino, poached and butchered for its horn, is infuriating.
If these are the best images from 2016, then the WPPY have their priorities completely fucked up.
What, the criteria for BEST must include pain, suffering, heartache, despair, and misery?
Since when should humans celebrate these ideals?
What is being celebrated is the hard, dangerous, critical work of spreading knowledge of suffering and inhumanity to an audience that may have some ability to alter the future course of events. If it goes un-seen then the rest of of us blithely move on in ignorance and injustice proceeds un-checked.
at least 3 of the photos in the article were of equally hideous subject matter. or do we not count the rhino cause its just an animal.
But the guardian though.

it wasnt photo of the year.
I’m smart enough to understand that way of looking at this competition. Oftentimes, I witness in the world around me, an incessant ‘race to the bottom’ just to provoke a reaction or manufacture emotion because culturally, we live in a state of insulated indifference or desensitized experience. I’m not one who takes this lightly and in my life I choose to celebrate all that is positive. You cannot unsee these. They are in your face, disruptive, and perhaps a little scaring.
