Have you ever noticed cars shutting off one of their front lights to activate a blinker? Well, I certainly have, so to find out why I see awkward one-eyed vehicles signaling turns at seemingly every intersection. I decided to dig into it to find out what’s going on.
I’d noticed this a while ago and thought it was odd and a little annoying. Now that I know the reason, it’s just annoying.
Thankfully, this feature has not come to all Canadian cars yet. Bluntly, it’s a terrible idea. Getting a clear view of a car’s position at a glance is far more important than their turning “intent.”
Article kept repeating “pesky government regulations”; but when I see that, I read “cheap automakers who want to either avoid having to put in separate running lights and turn indicators, or make the turn indicators bright enough when they’re positioned very close to the running lights.”
Really, the way the regulation should be written is “Nope, sorry, when an indicator is lighted it either has to be far enough away or bright enough to be distinct from the nearby running light, and you can’t just turn off that running light to make the indicator visible.”
It is not annoying and I find it helpful.
I can see why you find it annoying – because it’s behavior that is unexpected. But the fact that it’s annoying means it’s working.
One of the top causes of serious crashes are those involving turning vehicles. Raising the visibility of turning vehicles by making the turn signal more noticeable helps reduce these types of crashes.
