AT&T expands access to unlimited plan

AT&T Inc said on Thursday it would make its unlimited data plan available to all wireless customers who pay a monthly bill, days after rival Verizon Communications Inc announced an unlimited option.

I really dislike the fact that we have to wait for a price war in order to get access to something like an unlimited plan. I don’t trust any wireless company.

  1. That there are so few big players in this category means we should probably celebrate genuine competition when we see it. I don’t trust any of them, either.

  2. Google is paying 97$ per hour! Work for few hours and have longer with friends & family! !mj515d:

  3. Meh. On an Apple blog, one presumes you’re comparing the providers to Apple, which you can trust. But how is Apple different? They had to start losing customers to Samsung for a couple of years before they gave us a larger screen phone. They seem unwilling to consider putting the phone.app in their iPads for fear of endangering iPhone sales. The Mac Pro gets sold year after year at the same price with 2013 specs.

Every company has a tendency to misbehave in arenas where it has no competition. It’s not the company you’re supposed to trust. It’s the power of competition. Company A will give you a good deal, or else Company B will. None of them serve you out of a sense of beneficence; they serve you out of enlightened self interest. And that’s not a bad thing.

On the specific topic of unlimited data, I am (was) one of the people grandfathered into the old unlimited data plans. It was very frustrating to see the play out. But don’t forget that it was bad behavior on the part of a small group of asinine consumers that pushed that issue, too — the people who heard “unlimited” and insisted the word had to apply to every aspect of everything, and then they’d go and consume ridiculous amounts of bandwidth just to be tools. The companies once upon a time tried to offer a reasonable product, and consumers screwed them, and they took it away. The pendulum swung too far in the wrong direction, to be sure. I’m just happy to see it swinging back.

  4. I think it’s fantastic that competition has lead to the three biggest U.S. wireless providers offering unlimited plans. What would have been a better alternative?
