Rogue Amoeba:
The Mac App Store previously made up about half of Piezo’s unit sales, so we might have expected to sell half as many copies after exiting the store. Instead, it seems that nearly all of those App Store sales shifted to direct sales. It appears that nearly everyone who would have purchased Piezo via the Mac App Store opted to purchase directly once that was the only option. Far from the Mac App Store helping drive sales to us, it appears we had instead been driving sales away from our own site, and into the Mac App Store.
Obviously, this is not applicable to every developer or every app but it is interesting nonetheless.
I can’t speak for this app because I don’t know anything about it, but as a user and developer I am resistant to buying software outside of the Mac App Store.
I like knowing that apps are restricted to a sandbox environment. Anything else seems so very insecure.
i prefer MAS so I can load easily on multiple macs, and never worry about storing or losing product keys.

Pardon my ignorance, but do App Store requirements limit the degree to which an app can access system-level stuff like audio feeds? Because I’d then like to ask if anyone knows whether App Store restrictions were a contributor to Ambrosia Software’s decision to allow macOS updates to disable their WireTap Studio’s capabilities. Or am I conflating unrelated issues?
