All that we share

Powerful ad from Denmark with a lesson here for all of us. It’s a cliche that “We are more alike than we are different” but, in many cases, it’s also very true. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all focus more on how we are alike and what we have in common, even if we can disagree on some things?

  1. Wee, if this was a less…emotional…question, the pragmatist would rightly and rationally say – “I really think it depends on the degree of the differences and specifically what those might be…”

    🙂

  2. Considering all the ways human beings historically persecute each other, this is never going to be a less emotional question. Regardless of how anyone might want to quantify it.

  4. I agree with the sentiment here, but you also have to remember: we are not nearly as divided as it seems.

For example, it is easy to think of Donald Trump as representative of the US right now, but keep in mind that 70% of US Americans support Bernie Sanders, who is in every possible way the antithesis of Donald Trump. But US Americans didn’t get an opportunity to vote for Bernie Sanders because of political corruption that is on the scale of the financial corruption we discovered in 2008. That resulted in 2 candidates being offered who were both corrupt millionaires who were hated by the majority of the people but favored by the 1%. So do not draw a conclusion that we are not united. Draw a conclusion that we have political corruption to deal with as well as financial corruption that we already knew about since 2008. 2016 was to DC what 2008 was to New York.

So it is actually less about getting everybody together, and more about getting everybody organized to do the work to fix our problems. We need an FDR-style housecleaning of all the corruption. FDR was technology-inspired. Phones, planes, newspapers being delivered globally, radio, and TV were all like a light being switched on at midnight in a kitchen and you see all the roaches that were always there but you didn’t know it. Today, the Internet, YouTube, Facebook, iPhone — it is the same turning on the light and seeing the cockroaches. We have to do the 1940’s again now for the same reason. 70% of us are for FDR, 20% for Hitler, and 10% are confused. It is not a 50-50 split that has not obvious solution. People are more united than ever before. Locally and globally. But we also can see the terrible more clearly than ever before. We have to gut-up and address it. We have to organize to do that because we don’t have the governments we created anymore as a vehicle for that. They are corrupt. So we have to start at grass roots and get all-new political leaders elected.

  5. We’ve known about financial corruption since the 1980s repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act and the inevitable need for bank bailouts that followed.
